Ramadan: A Month of Fasting, Charity, and Feeding the Needy
Ramadan is one of the greatest months in Islam, a time of fasting, worship, mercy, and generosity. It is a month in which believers draw closer to Allah through obedience and compassion, especially by supporting those in need.
When Is Ramadan?
Ramadan begins with the sighting of the new moon, as Allah says in the Qur’an:
“So whoever sights the month, let him fast it.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185)
During this blessed month, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, seeking Allah’s pleasure and spiritual purification.
The Importance of Charity in Ramadan
Charity holds a special place in Islam, and its reward increases during Ramadan. Allah says:
“The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed which grows seven ears; in every ear there are a hundred grains.”
(Surah Al-Baqarah 2:261)
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was especially generous in Ramadan:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the most generous of people, and he was even more generous in Ramadan.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari)
Zakah: A Duty and a Purification
Zakah is an obligation upon every eligible Muslim and is a means of purifying wealth. Allah commands:
“Take from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them to increase.”
(Surah At-Tawbah 9:103)
Many Muslims choose to give their Zakah during Ramadan due to the multiplied rewards and the urgent needs of the poor.
Feeding the Fasting
Feeding those who fast is among the most rewarding acts of charity in Ramadan. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like his, without reducing the reward of the fasting person in the slightest.”
(Tirmidhi)
Providing Iftar meals, food packages, and essential support helps families observe Ramadan with dignity and hope.
Our Collective Responsibility
Ramadan teaches believers to care for others and to respond to hardship with compassion. Allah reminds us:
“And they give food, in spite of love for it, to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.”
(Surah Al-Insan 76:8)
By supporting charitable causes, giving Zakah, and feeding the fasting, we transform Ramadan into a source of mercy and relief for vulnerable communities.
